The Fnatic effect
Fnatic has always been one of EMEA’s most popular teams; their lovableness is amplified by the antics of Jake ‘Boaster’ Howlett but backed up by serious talent. With VCT LOCK//IN finally giving the squad their first international win, everyone was wondering how quickly they could lock up a second.
Dispatching NRG in the upper bracket quarterfinals, then quickly sweeping aside fan-favorites Paper Rex, Fnatic threw down the gauntlet immediately. In the upper bracket semifinal, things got more interesting, with NA’s Evil Geniuses taking a single game off the squad, making them the only team who managed to do so throughout the entire competition. Fnatic came back on Split, however, and cast EG into the lower bracket semifinal, where a hard-fought battle against Paper Rex earned them a rematch against EMEA’s new titans.
Speaking of Paper Rex, the SEA representatives deserve a shoutout for their dedication to Gekko, the feisty green-haired LA local with a plethora of slimy buddies. The squad picked him up six times (he was only played ten times throughout the tournament), and showed up and shut down with it despite their eventual elimination.
But back to the finals. Where Evil Geniuses had managed to take a map off of Fnatic in the upper bracket semifinals, they dropped 3 - 0 to Britain’s finest, although the final map Bind did go into overtime. The thing that makes this scarier, though, is that - to use VALORANT icon Yinsu Collins’ words - “they didn’t even bring their best Agents.” Nikita ‘Derke’ Sirmitev didn’t need to flex on the Jett, and Leo ‘Leo’ Jannesson left Sova on the bench. It feels like Fnatic haven’t even unleashed their final boss form yet, and that in itself is absolutely terrifying - unless you’re a Fnatic fan, then it’s great.
With VCT Champions looming, Fnatic has painted a target on their backs. Will they be able to make it three in a row? We’ll have to wait and see - but either way, it’s sure to be a special occasion when the best of the best face off in LA.
